Last night we had the chance to go see The Amazing Spiderman. It was indeed “amazing”. The 1st of every month is special discount day, only 12$ rather than the usual 20$, so of course we had to take advantage of this. Well, we hurried off to last showing in our pajamas and bag full of snacks; showing up there truly American. Got our tickets and went in. Again, Japanese movie theaters are way beyond clean, and the seats are in mint condition and extremely comfortable. More and more people came in, and it wasn’t until I heard the remark (in Japanese) “do you think they understand Japanese?” followed by laughter that I got a little worried. Not that watching a movie in a different language is bad, in fact I’m a huge fan of foreign film; but if it’s American and a first time viewing we would prefer it to be in English.
Sure enough it was the dubbed version; but this made our living in Japan experience even more “Japanesey”. Surprisingly we were able to understand quite a lot of the movie. And the fact that it was an action-packed movie understanding some dialogue wasn’t truly important. We survived the 2.5 hours and will definitely remember for next month to make sure Batman 3 will be English with subs.

*Interesting side note: The huge money making hit movie The Avengers hasn’t even made it to Japan yet. It won’t arrive here until August. It’s very strange how some movies make on time and some don’t. I understand it’s part of marketing and money, but if this movie is truly up in the top grossing list how did it take so long to get here?
