Some sad news about our new homeland, Tyler recently had a discussion with one of his Adult Conversation Classes about Animal Rights, to see their opinions on the issue. Well, since the students happened to be employees of a pharmaceutical company, they perform experiments on animals all the time and say it’s necessary. The discussion went from how a recent outbreak of Bird-Flu was most likely caused from chicken farming conditions, to wearing fur. Then the topic came up of how Japan is one of the only countries that still allow whaling under scientific research (yet then it can be sold for meat) or that dolphins can also be slaughtered. Yes 23,000 of those lovable adorable dolphins from Flipper and Seaworld are killed here every year then sold as food. Dolphin meat !??!! The students said “oh yeah I’ve eaten dolphin, it’s like beef.” This could easily be written off as a cultural argument, such as, “well, they eat dogs and cats in China, so what’s wrong with eating dolphins in Japan?” Aside from the fact that the ways they are catching the dolphins is unfair and cruel, there is a far more important issue related to the hunt that the public and the government must address. Dolphin and whale meat is high in mercury, and individuals who eat whale and dolphin meat at least three times a month, have over 10 more than the national average. Mercury is extremely toxic, and eating foods high in mercury is essentially poisoning your body. We watched the recent Academy Award winning Documentary THE COVE Thanks for reading!
We highly recommend this movie to everyone. So please go rent it! It was eye-opening and informative. There is no reason for this cruel mass slaughter to continue every year and that it must be stopped.
