We are here to debunk the myth that Japanese Love Hotels are sleazy or unsavory destinations. They are in fact our preferred way to stay in Japan in comparison to business or capsule hotels for a variety of reasons.
1) They are incredibly easy to find due to their blinding neon signs. So no need to make a prior reservation, just look for the signs and you’ll find ‘em. Also they are usually clumped together, so if one hotel is completely booked, you can just walk to the hotel next door. 2) You don’t have to deal with a check-in person. All rooms are reserved on a touch screen to give the guests utmost privacy. Considering our lack of confidence in speaking Japanese this makes the reservation process way simpler. 3) Beds are actually regular sized! “What?!” You may be saying to yourself. What hotel doesn’t gives guests a regular sized bed? Well, we have stayed in numerous business hotels that consider twin sized beds roomy enough for two. Maybe for 2 Japanese people, but for Tyler at 6’2” and Sam who is a pretty wild sleeper, that’s just too small. And I’m not even talking about how small the capsules are! Just think of that episode of Seinfeld when Kramer hosts the Japanese tourists in his dresser drawers and you get the idea. 4) Bathrooms are regular sized! Maybe we are just used to large, American styled showers and bathrooms. But it’s hard to believe just how small some business hotel showers can get. Not so in the love hotel! 5) It’s actually designed for the enjoyment of couples to stay there, unlike business hotels whose soul purpose is for the businessman who works a 90 hour work week to have a small break to sleep before he goes back to work all over again. With that said they usually have large TVs, karaoke machines, Playstations or Wiis, and comfortable couches and other nice amenities.
We decided to stay overnight in Nagasaki for a little getaway and stayed in a pretty amazing love hotel. Just get a load of the classy breakfast they served us.
